Water is essential for life and is therefore extremely important in determining the location of settlements. People need water to drink and so do their animals; it is needed to irrigate crops, can be used as a means of transport and streams and rivers are often useful boundary markers. Water has long fascinated mankind from the votive offerings of prehistoric times, through sacred springs and holy wells to wishing wells. This project is seeking to examine the location of all of the springs, streams, ponds and the river in order to try to better understand the choices made by our predecessors in this landscape in determining the location of the settlements here. |
