Bucge's Dun: What's in a Name?

We have it on good authority from the place name experts that Bowden was originally Bucge's Dun (pronounced bjz dn). We know that a dun is a flat topped hill and suspect that the long hill along which the Ridgeway runs is the dun referred to in the name. The fact that it separates Great and Little Bowden and has most of the Roman remains found in the area might seem to back this up. But who was Bucge? It is a personal name, believed to be female but little exists in the way of documents to tell us more.

This project hopes to untangle some of the mysteries and to look for more places named after this person in the wider region,
