Introduction and Background
In our researches into the history of St Mary-in-Arden church it has come to our attention that what remains of the churchyard today may be a fraction of its original size. It seems likely given the shape of it, that it was originally curvilinear in shape and would have continued on the other side of what is now Great Bowden Road. The late 20th century development of Harrod Drive sits in the area we believe was once within the church grounds. One resident kindly allowed our team to dig a 1 metre test pit in their garden.
The Excavation
The team excavated a single 1 metre square test pit. It was planned to try to go down 1 metre deep but the ground was very compacted and they only had time to dig 60 cm. Once the diggers had got down below the 19th and 20th century disturbance the only finds were several flints, probably neolithic. These have been sent for dating and a fuller report will be published here when it becomes available.
